October brought two releases: v0.24 of the open-source core, then Basic Memory 1.0 across Cloud and core.
Watch the 1.0 film on YouTube (one minute).
Basic Memory has two parts.
Cloud is the hosted app at app.basicmemory.com: the web app, teams, agents and billing.
Core is the open-source basic-memory package: the MCP server, the CLI, and the Markdown and search engine underneath both.

What's new in Basic Memory 1.0?
Basic Memory 1.0 adds a wiki for every project, live notes, document import, Basic Memory agents (beta), comments and suggestions, new plans with usage credits, and twelve new MCP tools.
A wiki for every project
Open any project as a wiki: an overview page, a page for every folder, and a change log.
Basic Memory keeps the index.md and log.md files current as your notes change.

The index and log files follow the Open Knowledge Format, and bm okf export writes a project as an OKF bundle any OKF tool can read.
Live notes
Put a KPI, a Gantt chart, a comparison or a task board inside any note with Comark components. The data stays in the note as ordinary lists and tables, and live views run a query over your project each time you open them.

A board, for example, is just Markdown checklists under headings:
::bm-kanban{title="A launch board"}
### Done
- [x] Freeze the schema
- [x] Write the migration note
### Now
- [ ] Usage emails
### Next
- Partner portal
::
Any tool that reads Markdown can still read the note. Basic Memory draws it as a board.
Documents become notes
Upload a PDF, Word, PowerPoint or CSV file and Basic Memory extracts it into a searchable note next to the original. Your AI reads and searches it like any other note.

Basic Memory agents (beta)
An agent is a note with instructions. It runs on a schedule, when a new note lands in a folder it watches, or when you start it.
Eleven ready-made templates file your inbox, follow up on meetings, pull out decisions, digest imported chats, write a weekly reflection, link and clean up notes, and catch contradictions and schema drift.

Every change lands in a shared review queue, where you see the diff and keep it or undo it. A scheduled run that has nothing new to look at is skipped, and costs nothing.

More on agents: Basic Memory agents.
People and agents on the same page
- Comments and suggestions. People and AI assistants comment and propose edits in a note, and anyone with access accepts or rejects them.
- Pocketbook. The Basic Memory app inside Claude and ChatGPT: browse, search, graph and read your notes without leaving the conversation.
- Browser agents. In browsers that support WebMCP, the web app gives browser agents tools to search and read notes and suggest edits, acting as you.

Plans and usage credits
New plans include usage credits, a member limit, and a spending limit you set. Existing users can stay on their plan, or upgrade to use agents.
| Cloud | Pro | Business | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price per month | $19 | $99 | $249 |
| Members | 2 | 5 | 25 |
| Usage credits | yes | yes | yes |
| Spending limit you set | yes | yes | yes |
Settings → Usage shows where every credit went, by person, API key, agent and background job. Full details are on the pricing page.

Twelve MCP tools
1.0 replaces the older MCP tools with twelve bm_* tools, each with clear arguments and its own manual page.
For identical tasks, they use 49% fewer tokens and 19% fewer calls than v0.24.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
bm_read | Read a note, a section, or a line range |
bm_write | Create or replace a note |
bm_edit | Change part of a note |
bm_search | Search by text, meaning, tags and frontmatter |
bm_context | Follow links out from a note |
bm_list | List one folder |
bm_find | Find files across a project |
bm_move | Move a note or folder |
bm_delete | Delete a note |
bm_project | List, create and inspect projects |
bm_schema | Infer, validate and compare note structure |
bm_man | Read the manual for each tool (for agents) |
bm_project_delete is there too, off unless you turn it on.
Also in core
bm doctoris a read-only report on your real projects, with the command that fixes each problem. Amemory-doctorskill walks an agent through it.- Fixes for watching newly created projects, large vector deletions and interrupted migrations on SQLite, and a stale read that could roll a note back to an older version.
What are the breaking changes in 1.0?
The MCP tools are renamed and their arguments change. With several projects, note and search tools need an explicit project. Read Migrating to 1.0 before switching clients.
What's in v0.24?
October 22, 2026 · v0.24.0 · v0.24.1
v0.24 lets agents read a knowledge base the way they read a codebase. Projects act as mount points, so an agent can list, find and read across them like folders.
- Read your notes like a codebase. Six POSIX-style tools (
cat, grep,ls,find, tail, man) with matching CLI commands.catcan read one section, a line range or a token budget. - Safe writes for many agents. Writes and edits can name the revision they read, and are refused if the note changed since. Notes can be locked read-only, and accepted writes record who made them.
- Document import.
bm import documentturns PDF, Word, PowerPoint and CSV files into extracted-text notes that link back to the source. - Facts with dates. An observation can say when it holds, and search can ask what was true on a given day:
- [decision] @effective:2026-06-10 The cache layer will use Redis. - Search across projects in one query, with full-text search for Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other scripts.
- New commands:
bm wiki,bm okf exportandcheck,bm prune, andbm installfor Claude Code, Codex, Tau and Pi. - Security fixes for the HTTP transports. Stdio, the default, was never affected.
The v0.24.1 patch fixed fresh installs, where commands such as bm status failed on a newer FastAPI.
